Video Game Swoon Not Seen in Syracuse | NCC News

? 2012 Evan Slavit

By Evan Slavit SYRACUSE (NCC NEWS) -?GameStop store manager Bill Pickens, a self-proclaimed gamer, practically gushes as he explains the premise of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, the latest chapter in the Call of Duty video game series. To him video games have only gotten better as the years go on.

But it doesn?t appear as though the rest of the country agrees with him.

In the past year video game console, software, and accessory sales have gone down 25%.

Why did the sales drop?

Gaming on devices such as smartphones or tablets has cut into the market.

Mobile games are generally cheaper than ones for consoles. In addition most people already have smartphones, so they don?t have to splurge on expensive hardware.?Games are easily downloadable, and conveniently playable wherever you take your phone.

The scene in Syracuse

In Syracuse Monday night that didn?t seem to matter. Anxious gamers looking to get their hands on the new Call of Duty game at its midnight release occupied a line snaking out of the GameStop in Destiny USA.

Leading up to the release people entered the store one at a time prepaying for the game in order to help the process move along quickly once the game officially released. They were handed posters with their purchase.

Outside, employees hosted trivia, awarding video game themed t-shirts to the victors.

Video game fans explain appeal of midnight release

Robert Rood and Shawn Oaks were one of the first in line. They had been waiting close to five hours. Why did they get there so early? Their experience at the last midnight release they went to.

?We were like 268 out of 430 people [in line], said Oaks. ?[We didn?t leave] till like 3:30, maybe 4:00 am.?

Oaks then explained that the appeal of getting the game at midnight for the two, was to get better acclimated with the game for an advantage in online play.

GameStop when there isn?t a midnight release

While this isn?t the scene every night at GameStop, Pickens says GameStop is plenty busy every other day as well.

?Oh yeah,? said Pickens, ?Here at this location we opened up a few years ago, and of course, with Destiny USA finally coming in we have a lot more business. A lot more business.?

Another successful video game store in Syracuse

As is Voltage Video Games in downtown Syracuse. Voltage Video Games sells retro consoles, games, and accessories as well as new ones. The original Nintendo, Sega Genesis, even Atari are all sold there; that component separates them from other retailers and have helped them succeed.
