International satellite experts release definitive record of ice sheet changes

An international team of satellite experts has produced the most accurate assessment of ice losses from Antarctica and Greenland to date, ending 20-years of uncertainty.

In a landmark study, published on 30 November in the journal Science, the researchers show that melting of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets has contributed 11.1 millimetres to global sea levels since 1992. This amounts to one fifth of all sea level rise over the survey period.

About two thirds of the ice loss was from Greenland, and the remainder was from Antarctica.

Although the ice sheet losses fall within the range reported by the IPCC in 2007, the spread of the IPCC estimate was so broad that it was not clear whether

Antarctica was growing or shrinking. The new estimates are a vast improvement (more than twice as accurate) thanks to the inclusion of more satellite data, and confirm that both Antarctica and Greenland are losing ice.

The study also shows that the combined rate of ice sheet melting has increased over time and, altogether, Greenland and Antarctica are now losing more than three times as much ice (equivalent to 0.95 mm of sea level rise per year) as they were in the 1990s (equivalent to 0.27 mm of sea level rise per year). The Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE) is a collaboration between 47 researchers from 26 laboratories, and was supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Led by Professor Andrew Shepherd at the University of Leeds and Dr Erik Ivins at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the study combines observations from 10 different satellite missions to develop the first consistent measurement of polar ice sheet changes.

The researchers were able to reconcile the differences between dozens of earlier ice sheet studies through careful use of matching time periods and survey areas, and by combining measurements collected by different types of satellites.

Professor Shepherd, who coordinated the study, said: "The success of this venture is due to the cooperation of the international scientific community, and due to the provision of precise satellite sensors by our space agencies. Without these efforts, we would not be in a position to tell people with confidence how the

Earth's ice sheets have changed, and to end the uncertainty that has existed for many years." The study also found differences in the pace of change at each pole.

Dr Ivins, who also coordinated the project, said: "The rate of ice loss from Greenland has increased almost five-fold since the mid-1990s. In contrast, while the regional changes in Antarctic ice over time are sometimes quite striking, the overall balance has remained fairly constant - at least within the certainty of the satellite measurements we have to hand."

Commenting on the findings, Professor Richard Alley, a climate scientist at Penn State University who was not involved in the study, said: "This project is a spectacular achievement. The data will support essential testing of predictive models, and will lead to a better understanding of how sea-level change may depend on the human decisions that influence global temperatures."

Stock Trading Information: Difference Between Trading in Forex and ...

The foreign exchange trade is also recognized as the FX market, and the forex dealing. Transacting that takes place among two areas with varied currencies is the premise for the fx market and the aspect of the trading in this business. The forex business is over thirty years old, started in the early 1970s. The forex trading is one that is not established on any one industry or investing in any one company, but the dealing and selling of currencies.

The distinction among the stock trade and the forex trading is the enormous dealing that happens on the forex market. There are millions and millions that are dealt every day in the forex market, nearly two trillion dollars are transacted every day. The total is a lot higher than the capital transacted on the customary stock market of any nation. The forex business is one that entails regimes, banks, financial organizations and those equivalent kinds of organizations from another countryside.

What is dealt, purchased and traded on the forex market is something that can readily be cashed in, meaning it can be rotated back to cash quickly, or often times it is, in fact, going to be cash. From one currency to other, the accessibility of cash in the forex trading is something that can take place rapidly for any investor from any nation.

The dissimilarity among the stock trade and the forex trading is that the forex business is worldwide, global. The stock trade is something that takes place only in a nation. The stock trade is established on industries and commodities that are in under a nation, and the forex trade takes that a move further to include any nation.

The stock trade has set the commerce hours. Mostly, this is moving to follow the trade day, and will be shut on banking leaves and weekends. The forex trade is one that is open usually twenty-four hours a day since the vast number of nations that are participating in forex dealing, purchasing and selling are positioned in so many distinctive time's zones. As one business is opening, other country's trade is shutting. This is the endless method of how the forex market dealing takes place.

The stock business in any nation is going to be established on only that state currency, say, for instance, the Japanese yen, and the Japanese stock business, or the United States stock business and the dollar. Nevertheless, in the forex trade, you are implicated in many kinds of nations, and numerous currencies. You will come upon quotations to a multiplicity of currencies, and this is a considerable distinction between the stock business and the forex business.

Email privacy legislation clears Senate committee

(AP) ? Over objections from law enforcement officials, the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved legislation that would require police to obtain a search warrant from a judge before they can review a person's emails or other electronic communications.

The bill passed Thursday makes it slightly more difficult for the government to access the content of a consumer's emails and private files from Google, Yahoo, Facebook and other Internet providers. Under the current law, the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act, a warrant is needed only for emails less than 6 months old.

The committee chairman and the bill's sponsor, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said digital files on a computer should have the same safeguards as paper files stored in a home. Americans "face even greater threats to their digital privacy, as we witness the explosion of new technologies and the expansion of the government's surveillance powers," Leahy said during the committee's vote.

The full Senate, which is in a lame-duck session, is not expected to vote on the legislation until it reconvenes early next year. The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee hasn't yet voted on a similar bill introduced by Democrats.

Passage of the bill comes just a few weeks after the stunning resignation of David Petraeus as the head of the CIA over an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. The case focused the public's attention on how easy it is for federal agents to access people's email accounts.

Privacy advocates and civil liberties groups applauded the committee's action, saying the law is outdated in an era of cloud computing, cheaper electronic storage, social networking and wireless phones. Such advances in technology have dramatically increased the amount of stored communications in ways no one anticipated a quarter of a century ago.

"We are very happy that the committee voted that all electronic content like emails, photos and other communications held by companies like Google and Facebook should be protected with a search warrant," said Chris Calabrese, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union.

The Justice Department and other law enforcement groups had resisted changes to the law. The associate deputy attorney general, James Baker, urged the committee last year to consider the adverse impact on criminal and national security investigations if a warrant were the only means for law enforcement officials to obtain emails and other digital files.

Petraeus stepped down earlier this month after FBI agents examined messages between him and Broadwell. The FBI obtained a court order, signed by a judge, to read the contents of Broadwell's email account before she was notified she was under investigation. Investigators also used grand jury subpoenas to obtain information about other electronic communications related to threatening messages she is accused of sending to a Tampa socialite.

Sen. Charles Grassley, the committee's top Republican, complained that the bill was rushed through the committee without a rigorous debate over its impact. The bill could hamper investigations by civil agencies, such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, that are charged with protecting consumers against fraud, he said.

But setting the bar higher doesn't prevent law enforcement agencies from doing their jobs, according to current and former prosecutors, judges and attorneys who specialize in privacy issues. Federal law enforcement authorities in four Midwestern and Southern states have been working with the more demanding warrant requirement since 2010 after an appeals court ruled warrantless access to emails was unconstitutional. To get a warrant, a judge must have proof of probable cause that a crime is being committed.

"I don't see anything (in the Senate bill) that's going to seriously concern law enforcement in terms of our ability to request warrants and to get the contents of the material that we need," said Joseph Cassilly, the state's attorney in Harford County, Md., and a former president of the National District Attorneys Association. "Since you've already got to get warrants for the stuff that's less than 180 days, it's obviously not an insurmountable standard."

Nor does the legislation weaken other methods used by law enforcement for collecting electronic information. A subpoena signed by a federal prosecutor ? not a judge ? will continue to be sufficient for obtaining routing data from third-party Internet providers that can identify the sender of an email and the location where the message was sent.

Police also can use a judicial order to get the "to" and "from" addresses of an email, but not the contents. These orders must be issued by a judge, but the agency seeking one need only show there is reasonable suspicion of a crime ? a lower legal standard than probable cause.

In a Nov. 21 letter to Leahy, 30 former federal and state prosecutors and judges said the bill would provide "a much needed judicial check on when the government can access our private digital information." Concerns that the bill would keep law enforcement from acting quickly during emergencies are unfounded, they added, because the Senate bill does not change a provision in the existing law that compels third-party providers to give the government information in situations where lives are at risk or children are being exploited or abused.

Digital Due Process, a wide-ranging coalition that includes Google, Microsoft and Twitter, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union and Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform, has mounted a public relations campaign supporting the Senate bill. The coalition says updating the law will clear the "murky legal landscape" for companies and consumers alike and provide the proper safeguards for the vast amounts of information stored in server farms.

There's money at stake, too. The global market for cloud computing via the Internet is estimated to be $240 billion by 2020. But the Business Software Alliance, a coalition member that represents Apple, Intel and Microsoft, said U.S. cloud providers are at a disadvantage unless online privacy and security laws are changed. If consumers aren't sure their information is being properly protected by U.S. firms on the remote, networked computer servers that make up the cloud, they'll take their business elsewhere.

1 hr.

During the election, President Barack?Obama crashed servers when he appeared in an impromptu "Ask Me Anything" post on Reddit.?Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican from California,?decided to do the same ? "Together, we can make Washington take a break from messing w/ the Internet" his post said in part. But?the response wasn't quite as positive as he might have hoped.

Issa's post, seeking?discussion of a two-year ban on legislation that would affect the Internet, was submitted to?the popular social news site?Tuesday evening. Shortly afterwards, it reached the front page and questions started rolling in. By Wednesday morning,?the time Issa had set for answering questions, the queries?had turned into something of a dogpile.

By far the most popular question the one?posed by user The_Milkman: "Hey Darrell, why did you vote for CISPA?"?Indeed, Issa's sponsorship of CISPA???the controversial?Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act that was approved by the House, but has yet to be approved or vetoed by the president ????was the topic of many questions and much ire.

Issa's?attachment to the controversial piece of legislation?? which would expand?government agencies' ability to access data from sites like Facebook and Twitter???seemed to poison his attempt to solicit Reddit's help?from the start.

Regardless of the unfriendly atmosphere, Issa answered dozens of questions, including some openly hostile ones (his post record can be found here). And like the president, he included a picture of himself answering questions for authenticity's sake. Both the grilling Issa received and his responses could easily be considered more thorough than the president's, who answered questions some?commentators?characterized as softballs.

But regardless of the tone of the conversation, the goal of procuring constructive input on the proposed legislation (the "Internet American Moratorium Act" or IAMA)?seems to have been achieved. A number of comments and suggested changes have been submitted at the site set up for this purpose, and various issues have been raised in the comment threads that may help improve the bill. And the high positive vote count on the AMA itself indicates that the community is at least interested in discussing the topic.

There's a lesson to be learned for politicians and other?public figures who are considering this kind of open discussion on a site like Reddit: It's not always going to be a love-in, as it was with the president. You may end up like Issa, with a front-page post and 2,500 comments calling you everything from an opportunistic hypocrite to a crony of big business.

Morgan has hat trick, US beats Ireland 5-0

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Alex Morgan scored three first-half goals and the Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. women's national team beat Ireland 5-0 on Wednesday night, the latest match in an exhibition tour for fans following the London Games.

Sydney Leroux added two goals to help the top-ranked United States improve to 4-0-2 on its Fan Tribute Tour.

Morgan struck first in the 24th minute. It was her 25th goal this year, making her the third U.S. player to reach the mark in a season ? Abby Wambach had 31 in 2004 and Michelle Akers had 39 in 1991.

Morgan scored again in the 34th minute, when she had a clear path from just outside of the box in front of goalkeeper Emma Byrne. Morgan's third, which was unassisted, came in the 44th minute.

It was Morgan's second career hat trick. She also had one March 7 in a 4-0 victory over Sweden.

Morgan was subbed out for Leroux, who scored in the 66th minute to make it 4-0. She scored again in the 81st minute for the final margin.

Leroux has a reserve-record 12 goals this season.

Hope Solo started in goal for the U.S. while her personal life was again grabbing headlines. Earlier Wednesday, husband Jerremy Stevens was taken into custody in Hillsborough County, Fla., for an alleged parole violation.

The day before their wedding on Nov. 13 in Washington state, Stevens was arrested for alleged domestic assault during a party in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland. Court documents said police reported seeing signs of a fight and a cut on Solo's arm.

A judge released Stevens after a court appearance, saying there was no evidence connecting him to any assault.

Solo spoke to reporters at a team training session in Portland on Tuesday, proclaiming she was happy and she would never stand for domestic violence. She blamed the media for distorting the story.

Following reports of Stevens arrest in Florida, Solo posted to Twitter: "I feel bad for all the ignorance in the world. People are so quick to judge. The media spins stories in such dramatic fashion. I will continue to show love, and never make judgments. I am blessed w True Love & the beautiful game of soccer. I wish everybody the same happiness."

Stevens was selected with the No. 28 pick of the 2002 draft by the Seahawks after a stellar career at Washington. But he also was involved in incidents away from football that included reckless driving charges for crashing into a nursing home.

Solo also went to Washington. According to various reports, they started dating following the London Olympics.

The United States is 9-0-0 against Ireland, including a 2-0 victory in September, 2008 in Bridgeview, Ill. The Americans have outscored Ireland 35-1 in their nine matches.

Ireland, ranked 32nd in the world, has never qualified for the Olympics or the World Cup.

Jill Ellis, women's development director for U.S. soccer, coached the U.S. team against Ireland. Former Australian national team coach Tom Sermanni takes over the national team in January, replacing Olympic coach Pia Sundhage, who stepped down.

Ireland, coached by Sue Ronan, will play the United States again in Glendale, Ariz., on Saturday as the tour continues.

The U.S. women improved to 10-1-0 in Portland, with their lone loss coming to Germany in a FIFA Women's World Cup semifinal in 2003.

With temperatures in the low 40s, attendance for the match was 10,092.

Google Drive for iPhone and iPad updated with spreadsheet editing

Google Drive for iPhone and iPad has been updated with improved collaboration and on-device sharing. Users can now create, edit, and collaborate on spreadsheets and upload to Drive with other apps using "Open in..." There is also a new Uploads section that allows you to manage upload progress and see recent uploads.

The ability to edit spreadsheets has been one of the biggest user requests, so it's great to see Google respond by including that ability. It still isn't possible to update presentation, but hopefully that will be coming in the future as well.

Google Drive is a Dropbox-like service that lets you store documents pictures, and other files and share them with whoever you want. A free account includes 5GB of storage space with options to upgrade to 25 GB and 100 GB for $2.49/mo and $4.99/mo, respectively.

Three new arthropod species have been found in the Maestrazgo Caves in Teruel

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A team of scientists from the University of Navarra and the Catalan Association of Biospeleology have discovered three new collembolan species in the Maestrazgo caves in Teruel, Spain. Their description has been published in the Zootaxa journal. These minute animals belong to one of the most ancient animal species on the planet.

The Maestrazgo caves in Teruel are located in a region of the Iberian Range where fauna has not been the subject of much study. It is a very isolated region since its average altitude is between 1,550 m and 2,000 m asl and its climate can be described as "almost extreme" experiencing temperatures of between -40?C and -25?C. Inside the caves, however, the temperatures remain constant at between 5?C and 11?C.

"Studying fauna in the caves allows us to expand on our knowledge of biodiversity. In the case of the three new collembolan species that we have found in Teruel, they are organisms that have survived totally isolated for thousands of years. Having 'relatives' on the surface means they act like relics from the past that have survived the climate change taken place on the outside of the caves," as explained by Enrique Baquero, who carried out a taxonomic study along with Rafael Jordana, both of whom are from the University of Navarra.

For these scientists it is vital to study how new species found adapt to the cave environments. "Like other cave-adapted animals, the collembolans require greater chemical sensitivity as they cannot use their sight in the absence of light," explains Baquero.

These animals are arthropods from the hexapod group (meaning six legs), a parallel group to insects. However, they are different and more primitive, showing absence of wings, different structure of their mouth, presence of the ventral organ and frequently, presence of the springing organ named the furca (an uneven abdomen appendix used to jump far away from danger).

Field work in extreme conditions

The three new species of collembolan documented in the investigation published in the Zootaxa journal belong to very different groups and are phylogenetically separate from one another. They have been named Pygmarrhopalites maestrazgoensis, P. cantavetulae and Oncopodura fadriquei. The researchers have also found specimens of five other species in the caves that have already been documented in nearby and further away caves.

These animals were found by a team of speleologists headed by Floren Fadrique from the Catalan Association of Biospeleology. They entered different caves in harsh conditions of cold, humidity and darkness.

The expert concludes that "the animals were captured by laying down traps. These consisted of jars containing different liquids, which the animals approached in search of food. They were then trapped until the speleologists returned to collect them. Professor Jordana and I received the samples collected by the speleologists and proceeded to their identification."

40 million Windows 8 licenses sold in a month; meanwhile, mum's the word on Surface sales

Windows 8 sells 40 million licenses in a month meanwhile, mum's the word on Surface sales

It took just four days for Windows 8 to hit four million machines (ours included), and in just over a month, Microsoft has managed to sell some 40 million licenses of its tiled OS. To date, Windows 8 is outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades, but given that the company had moved 600 million copies of the latter back in June, the new kid on the software block still has quite a ways to go. The news comes just hours after Microsoft also announced that it had sold a whopping 750,000 Xbox 360 consoles during the Black Friday weekend, which makes the omission of one other number that much more glaring -- after all, if it's so easy to dig up Xbox and Windows 8 numbers, why are we left with awkward adjectives to describe Surface sales?

Delaware sees strides made in an early childhood education initiative

State officials highlighted the accomplishments of a major early childhood education initiative Tuesday.

Gov. Markell and others were in Wilmington honoring the high performing child-care providers participating in the Delaware Stars for Early Success rating program.

Officials assess the progress of Delaware Stars for Early Success.

Officials assess the progress of Delaware Stars for Early Success.

Created in 2006, the Delaware Stars rating program measures childcare providers on a 1 to 5 scale for the level of quality in areas including learning environment, professional development, family engagement and business and management practices, and offers technical and financial support as providers seek to move up the scale.

Delaware Children?s Department Secretary Vivian Rapposelli says over 330 childcare providers are now part of Delaware Stars and many participating moved up the 5 star rating scale this year.

?I think that the level of Stars movement the programs have made have been key because every time they?re able to commit to a higher star, you know they?re bringing in quality and making improvements to their programs which the enriches the environment for the children we?re trying to serve,? said Rapposelli.

According to the Delaware Office of Early Learning, just 28 centers were rated between 3 and 5 stars last year. That jumped to 88 this year. 21 earned the highest rating of 5 stars, up from 13 a year ago. 4 star rated facilities surged from 11 to 48 in the past 12 months and 3 star providers jumped from 14 to 19.

?It?s exciting to see programs improve in terms of their quality because ultimately what that means is that kids are getting a better education before they start kindergarten and [they're] getting off to a great start, said Lt Governor Matt Denn. ?So, for us it?s not just about a 3, or a 4, or a 5 star. It really translates into kids being able to thrive in school.?

The program received a major boost in the last 18 months, helped by $22 million set aside by the state for early childhood education and part of the $50 million Delaware won in the federal Race to the Top Early Learning challenge.

Those funds have led the state to set an ambitious goal for the Stars program ? to have 80 percent of high need children in a rated program in 5 years. The state was at 20 percent a year ago. It stands at 31 percent this year.

Markell emphasized that means there?s still work to do to reach the state?s goal and a ?culture of high expectations? must be maintained.

?It?s not enough to put the money in. We?ve got to make sure we?re delivering,? said Markell ?So, the culture of high expectations has to be across the board. If centers are applying, let?s make sure we?re working with them to get them going. We have to work with parents, providers, everybody.?

LibreOffice (for Mac)

We reviewed LibreOffice in 2011, and, as it was then, it's still the best no-cost alternative to Microsoft Office that you can find for Windows, Linux, and OS X. In this review, I focus on LibreOffice for OS X, and the Mac-specific reasons why you might or might not want it. I think you're far better off paying for Microsoft Office if you use Windows, while, under Linux, LibreOffice is your only choice if you want a full-featured office suite.

What is LibreOffice?
Some technical details first. LibreOffice is an offshoot from the old OpenOffice.org application suite, now renamed Apache OpenOffice. Like any other office suite, LibreOffice gives you a word-processor (Writer), a spreadsheet app (Calc), presentations and graphics apps (Impress and Draw), plus database, mathematical, and other tools. LibreOffice is fuller-featured and more up-to-date than any other OpenOffice variant, but it still suffers from a clunky interface with a 1990s look and feel.

On the Mac, if you need to share documents with a Microsoft-Office-centric world, you'll want Microsoft Office for the Mac, the only Mac application suite that's fully compatible with Windows-based formats, and a powerful and elegant app by any standard. The best Mac-native alternative to Microsoft Office is Apple's iWork suite with its dazzling graphics and high level of Office compatibility, and its ability to share and sync documents to other Macs and iOS devices through iCloud, but Microsoft's suite is the obvious first choice if you share documents with Windows users.

Libre Means Free
So where does that leave LibreOffice? For one thing, LibreOffice costs nothing, it exports to the latest Microsoft Office formats in addition to its native ODT format, and it's the obvious first choice for any organization that requires the use of open formats and open-source software. Also, LibreOffice is one of the few apps running under OS X that give you a fighting chance of importing legacy documents created by old Windows and MS-DOS apps?and even documents created by ancient Mac apps that almost no other current Mac app can open. For example, LibreOffice opens documents created by any version of WordPerfect, including the DOS, Mac, and Windows versions. This matters because law firms and many government agencies still have thousands of documents in WordPerfect format, and these might otherwise get orphaned if the office switched to the Mac.

LibreOffice also opens Microsoft Works documents that Microsoft Office for Windows can't open, and its graphics module opens vector graphics in CorelDraw and Visio formats. The latest development version (soon to be officially released as version 3.7) opens Microsoft Publisher documents?a feat no app other than Microsoft Publisher has ever performed on any platform.

An Office Alternative?
As a Microsoft Office alternative, LibreOffice ranks as fair-to-good, which is a lot better than nothing. It's harder to use, less flexible, less easily automated, and a lot worse-looking. It opens almost any recent Word file with fairly faithful formatting, and does a good job of opening Excel worksheets if they aren't exceptionally complicated and don't use Excel's latest graphic features. If all you need is the ability to edit and save uncomplicated Word files on the Mac, then OS X's built-in TextEdit may be all you need, just as Windows' built-in WordPad may be all you need to edit such files under Windows.

As a tool for importing and converting legacy documents, LibreOffice ranks as good, which is better than any rival on OS X, but it can't match older utilities like MacLinkPlus (formerly available from DataViz) which won't run under recent versions of OS X. LibreOffice won't solve all legacy-file problems, however. For example, it can't open files created by the ancient MS-DOS versions of Microsoft Word?but neither can the latest Mac version of Microsoft Word. I keep wishing that Microsoft's Mac Business Unit will create import filters for legacy formats such as WordPerfect and Word for MS-DOS, but I've been waiting a long time, and I'm not very hopeful. Meanwhile, for anyone who really needs to run legacy DOS or Windows apps on a Mac, there's always the option to buy an app like VMware Fusion or Parallels Workstation that makes it possible to run a Windows app on the OS X desktop.

Other OpenOffices
LibreOffice isn't the only OpenOffice offshoot available for the Mac. A slightly more Mac-native branch of OpenOffice called NeoOffice is available for download to anyone who donates $10 per year. NeoOffice lags behind LibreOffice in its feature set, and its import filters tend to lack features built into LibreOffice's filters; for example, LibreOffice can import non-western alphabets in WordPerfect documents, but NeoOffice can't. NeoOffice has one major advantage over LibreOffice: it's far more stable. Under OS X?though not under Windows or Linux?LibreOffice crashes a lot more often than any modern app should, often when opening a document or changing an option. NeoOffice tends to stay open when performing the same operation.

LibreOffice isn't for every Mac user, but for anyone who has to work with oddball formats and legacy documents, it's an essential tool. And you can't argue with the price.

Pakistan plans to hold national elections in May

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan plans to hold landmark national elections in May, the country's information minister said Tuesday. The vote would mark the first time a civilian government completed a full five-year term in the country and transferred power through the ballot box.

Previous governments have either been deposed in army coups or dismissed by presidents allied with the generals. That history has led to fervent speculation in the past few years about whether the government would make it to the finish line this time around.

Despite repeated predictions that the government would be forced to call early elections because of political pressure, it now appears the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party will serve out its full term, which expires in March.

Elections must be held within 90 days after the end of the term under the guidance of an interim government installed by the ruling coalition.

"God willing, the elections will be held in May," Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira told reporters in the eastern city of Lahore.

The government has repeatedly said elections will be held on time, but Kaira's comments were the first indication of an actual timeframe.

The army remains the most powerful institution in Pakistan, but the past few years have seen an erosion of its authority as it has been bogged down in a bloody war against the Pakistani Taliban. The country's civilian politicians and judges have taken advantage of this scenario to carve out more power for themselves ? a struggle that has often been accompanied by controversy.

An international human rights organization criticized Pakistan's top judges on Tuesday for trying to prevent media criticism of the judiciary by threatening contempt of court proceedings, which can bring prison terms.

"Judges sworn to uphold the rule of law should not be using their broad contempt powers to muzzle criticism by the media," said Brad Adams, Asia director at U.S.-based Human Rights Watch.

"Judges have no special immunity from criticism. Unless they want to be seen as instruments of coercion and censorship, they should immediately revoke these curbs on free expression," Adams said.

Private media outlets have mushroomed in Pakistan in recent years, bringing greater criticism of all branches of government.

The high courts in Islamabad and Lahore have both issued orders to stop the broadcast of television programs critical of the judiciary within the past two months, said the New York-based group.

"No branch of government, including the courts, should be immune from public opinion in a democratic society," Adams said. "Pakistan's judges have demonstrated the independence to hold the government accountable. But their credibility will be lost so long as they fight against scrutiny and accountability of the judiciary itself."

The Pakistani Taliban have also targeted the media.

The militant group claimed responsibility Tuesday for a failed assassination attempt against a prominent Pakistani TV anchor. Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said the group targeted Geo TV's Hamid Mir because he was "promoting secular forces."

The bomb was found underneath Mir's car in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, on Monday and was defused by police.

The Taliban threatened Mir and other journalists last month because the group was unhappy with their coverage of a schoolgirl activist shot by the militants.

The Taliban shot 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai in the head for criticizing the militants and promoting girls' education. She is currently recovering in Britain.

Ahsan, the Taliban spokesman, said they will target Mir again and other journalists opposed by the militants. He spoke to The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location.

Sonar vision system for congenitally blind

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A "sonar vision" system that enables people who are blind from birth to perceive the shape of a face, a house or even words and letters, is being developed by a team at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Using this device, the researchers have shown that, in people that are blind from birth, the areas of the cerebral cortex normally devoted to reading become activated in response to stimulation.

The results of this study, conducted in conjunction with researchers at the ICM Brain and Bone Marrow Institute Research Center (Inserm/UPMC/AP-HP) and NeuroSpin (CEA-Inserm), were published in Neuron on November 8.

It is generally accepted that the visual cortex fails to develop normally in the congenitally blind, to such an extent that it can prove impossible to recover sight at a later point -- even in cases where blindness can be corrected. In reality, the blind can indeed access a kind of vision, describe objects, and even identify written words and letters, using a "sensory substitution device" (SSD), which transforms images into sound.

These are the results demonstrated in the study conducted at the Edmond and Lily Safra Neuroscience Center (Hebrew University of Jerusalem). The study was conceived by researchers at the Hebrew University, who carried out the experimental components, with scientific support from French cognitive neuroimaging specialists.

The device consists in a small video camera embedded in a pair of eyeglasses, a laptop (or Smartphone) which transforms images into sounds, and stereo headphones to hear the sounds produced. For example, an oblique line is transformed into an increasingly high-pitched sound (or increasingly lower-pitched sound). The same principle is used to encode much more complex images in auditory form.

Using this system, the blind can achieve greater "visual" acuity than that defined as blindness according to WHO criteria.

After only 70 hours of specialized training, the blind are able to correctly classify images into different categories (faces, houses, etc.). They can also perceive other important information, such as where people are located in a room and certain facial expressions. They can even read words and letters (see videos at http://brain.huji.ac.il/).

In addition to the performance enabled by this sensory substitution system, the researchers at the Hebrew University wanted to understand what happens in the brain when a blind person learns to "see" through sound. To this end, they have developed a functional MRI study based on a specific paradigm.

In particular, they have shown that the regions of the cortex normally devoted to visual perception, which seem to serve no apparent use in the blind, become highly activated in response to the "sonar vision" of faces, houses and words, etc.

Not only is the visual cortex activated, it also demonstrates a "normal" functional selectivity of different categories of objects. Thus, in a sighted person, a very specific region of the visual cortex in the left hemisphere (known by the acronym VWFA), is known to become more activated when perceiving a string of letters than when perceiving any other kind of object. It is exactly this same region that is activated when a blind person reads letter using the "sonar vision" device.

"The fact that this specialization for reading develops after just a few hours of training shows a remarkable degree of cerebral plasticity," explained Stanislas Dehaene (NeuroSpin brain imaging center). These results back up the idea that that the so-called visual cortex is selective in analyzing the shape of objects, and can perform this function based on visual input (as is generally the case), but also, if necessary, based on auditory or tactile input.

"These results suggest that it may be possible, with the right technology and rehabilitation, to 'wake up' certain areas of the brain and access certain aspects of the visual world, even after years, or even a lifetime of blindness," concluded Laurent Cohen (ICM Research Center).

Glen 2961 House | Cuded

Designed by SAOTA ? Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects in collaboration with Three 14 Architects, this three story contemporary home Glen 2961 House is located in Oranjezicht, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa.
?

The clients who lived in an existing house on the property needed to rebuild the house in order to suit the demands of their family. The site on Glen Avenue in Higgovale faces in a Northerly direction, with its boundaries on the South East. Although the wind conditions are tough, the site?s moderate slope allows the design to engage with different levels of the garden adjacent to the areas of the three level lounge.

The client appointed SAOTA ? Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects to complete the design of a new home. The clients bravely followed their architect?s advice to see the bigger picture and re-start on a clean slate. The new home was to respond to the site and garden closely, to allow enough space for the family?s diverse requirements ? whilst create separate private spaces within the house, and respond to the fierce winds which seasonally hurtle down Table Mountain yet provide a relaxed, homely character in the spirit of Higgovale. The clients selected to proceed with the Design Development and project construction with Three14 Architects. The principal objectives in the design approach was to screen the heart of the home from the South Easterly and create large semi-enclosed gardens which allow the 2 lower levels of the house to seamlessly connect to garden and terraces at all times.

SAOTA relied on robust uncluttered finishes of off-shutter concrete for soffits and various walls, painted bagged brickwork, specialized polished concrete topping and oak cabinetry and ceilings. To amplify the sense of openness of the rooms and the gardens, the living rooms have large openings of sliding aluminium doors ? this openness is further enhanced by glass handrails to successfully blur the boundaries of interior and exterior. The kitchen remains the focus of the first floor area, and the main outdoor braai terrace is a generous layout with outdoor sitting and dining areas. The upper level of the house ? to which one approaches on arrival at the property ? accommodates 4 en-suite bedrooms with good views and a large study / library area. The garage screens the courtyards from the street.

First gas tanker crosses Arctic

A large tanker carrying liquified natural gas (LNG) is set to become the first ship of its type to sail across the Arctic.

The carrier, Ob River, left Norway in November and has sailed north of Russia on its way to Japan.

The specially equipped tanker is due to arrive in early December and will shave 20 days off the regular journey.

The owners say that changing climate conditions and a volatile gas market make the Arctic transit profitable.

Long-term preparation

Built in 2007 with a strengthened hull, the Ob River can carry up to 150,000 cubic metres of gas. The tanker was loaded with LNG at Hammerfest in the north of Norway on 7 November and set sail across the Barents Sea. It has been accompanied by a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker for much of its voyage.

You are able to reach a highly profitable market by saving forty percent of the distance, that's forty percent less fuel used as well?

End Quote Tony Lauritzen Dynagas

The ship, with an international crew of 40, has been chartered from its Greek owners Dynagas by the Russian Gazprom energy giant. It says it has been preparing for the trip for over a year.

"It's an extraordinarily interesting adventure," Tony Lauritzen, commercial director at Dynagas, told BBC News.

"The people on board have been seeing polar bears on the route. We've had the plans for a long time and everything has gone well."

Mr Lauritzen says that a key factor in the decision to use the northern route was the recent scientific record on melting in the Arctic.

"We have studied lots of observation data - there is an observable trend that the ice conditions are becoming more and more favourable for transiting this route. You are able to reach a highly profitable market by saving 40% of the distance, that's 40% less fuel used as well."

Shale of the century

But melting ice is not the only factor. A major element is the emergence of shale gas in the US.

The Norwegian LNG plant at Hammerfest was developed with exports to the US in mind. But the rapid uptake of shale in America has curbed the demand for imported gas.

Meanwhile in Japan, in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, there has been a growing interest in alternative power sources, especially gas.

"The major point about gas is that it now goes east and not west," says Gunnar Sander, senior adviser at the Norwegian Polar Institute and an expert on how climate change impacts economic activity in the Arctic.

"The shale gas revolution has turned the market upside down; that plus the rapid melting of the polar ice."

He stresses that the changes in climate are less important than the growing demand for oil and gas.

"The major driver is the export of resources from the Arctic region, not the fact that you can transit across the Arctic sea."

There is an expectation that because of changing climactic conditions, sea traffic across the northern sea route will increase rapidly. 2012 has been a record year both for the length of the sailing season and also for the amount of cargo that has been shipped.

But Gunnar Sander says there are limits to the growth and some perspective is required.

"Nineteen thousand ships went through the Suez canal last year; around 40 went through the northern sea route. There's a huge difference."

Oh, So This Is Where You Use The Microsoft Surface

surface-in-the-kitchenThe Microsoft Surface is a great kitchen computer, and sadly, that's about it. You can tell a lot about a new product by how well you integrate it into your life, and for the Surface, the product has been largely sitting on my kitchen countertop for the past couple of weeks, except for that one time my daughter's iPad was charging and she wanted to watch Netflix. Or that other time when I carried it to Startup Weekend, then ended up using it as a hard surface to press down on while writing with pen and paper. Oh, Surface. You just don't fit in. Newlywed high school teacher resigns after alleged affairs with ...

A former high school biology teacher from Walton, New York who was allegedly having sex with two underage students has been charged with rape, according to the Daily Mail.

Stephanie Fletcher, 28, was engaged in an affair with another teacher at Walton High School as well. She is also a newlywed.

Fletcher initiated the relationships with the two underage students ? both 16-year-old males at the time ? by sending them lewd text messages and naked photos of herself, reports local CBS affiliate WBNG.

The relationships became intimate when Fletcher offered to tutor the students individually after school.

?She was telling me that every question I got right we could do something,? said one of the students, according to WBNG.

The sexual encounters generally happened outside of school. Fletcher allegedly had sex with one of the students at his sister?s house. The other student reportedly had sex with Fletcher on a couch in his home during one of the tutoring sessions.

Sexual contact allegedly occurred during breaks between classes, in empty classrooms and in the school parking lot as well.

One of the students told investigators that his sexual relationship with Fletcher began in December of 2010, the same year that Fletcher got married, according to the Daily Mail. He said it lasted into the spring of 2011.

Sexual relations between Fletcher and the other student reportedly began in March or April of 2012 and lasted into the early part of the summer.

One of Fletcher?s alleged victims told police investigators that he had been ?picked on and bullied? by the male teacher at Walton High School with whom Fletcher had also been conducting an affair, according to the Daily Star of Oneonta, New York.

The alleged victim reportedly sent a letter complaining about the mistreatment to the home of the high school principal, Michael MacDonald.

According to police, Fletcher threatened to commit suicide if word got out about their sexual activities.

Fletcher has since resigned from her teaching position at Walton High School.

?She is no longer employed by the school district,? said Judith Breese, chairperson of the Walton Board of Education, according to the Daily Mail.

Charges against Fletcher include two counts of third-degree rape, one count of a third-degree criminal sexual act and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

She has pleaded not guilty to each charge.
