Tabulaw Seeks to Simplify Legal Research and Writing ? Robert ...

A new website called Tabulaw hopes to simplify the task of legal research and writing. As of this writing, the site is still in a private beta, which means you?ll have to fill out a request to obtain an invitation to try it out.

The site?s premise is that legal research tools are expensive, fragmented and redundant. It seeks to remedy this by combining key tools in a single location and making them all play nice together.

A Quote Bundle in Tabulaw

From within the Tabulaw site, you can search for a court opinion. (It uses Google Scholar to find cases.) Once you find a case, as you read through it, you can highlight passages. The text you highlight is automatically saved, complete with its citation. The passages are saved in Quote Bundles to which you can assign names and descriptions.

Once you have done your research and you are ready to start writing, you can do that from within Tabulaw also. You can create and edit a new document in Tabulaw, upload one from your computer, or import one from Google Docs. It appears that Tabulaw uses Google Docs as its document-editing base.

As you write, your quotes are displayed in a panel to the right of the document. Simply click any quote to insert it in your document, complete with its full citation (including page citation). You can also click a button to return to the case and see the quote in context. Any documents you create in Tabulaw can be downloaded to Microsoft Word.

Tabulaw has fairly rudimentary collaboration features at this point. You can share your Quote Bundles with other Tabulaw users or send them by email. You cannot share documents directly from within Tabulaw, as far as I could see.

There are shortcomings to Tabulaw. For one, there is no way to search statutes, which limits its usefulness for some. For another, it has no real word-processing features other than the ability to create and write documents. For any formatting and final touches, you would have to export the document.

That said, the ability to easily save, organize and use quotes from court cases could be a time saver. I could see this being a useful intermediary tool when writing a quick memorandum on a short deadline. Get it started on your computer, upload it to Tabulaw and incorporate the research, then download it and give it the finishing touches.

Meizu MX arrives at China at last

by Edwin - on January 2nd, 2012

The original iPhone killer manufacturing company, Meizu, did not quite manage to live up to its nickname given by industry watchers, which explains the iPhone?s lofty position in the world of smartphones at the moment. Still, if at first you don?t succeed, try again ? and it is nice to see Meizu not throwing in the towel, but perhaps this time around they are not too interesting in taking on that cursed mantle that no one has really come close to accomplishing ? preferring instead to chart their own route where a smartphone is concerned.

The Meizu MX will first hit its home country, China, from January 1st onwards, making it the perfect way to kick off a new year if you happen to be on the lookout for a new handset. Well, this highly anticipated smartphone has already picked up a warm reception, with the local market showing a really huge interest in its home market, not to mention news portals showing interest on the international front.

It seems that with the pre-order process beginning from December 1st, 2012, Meizu has already picked up an overwhelming amount of pre-orders. The Meizu MX does seem rather familiar to some, considering how it is reminiscent of the Meizu M9 that was rolled out a year earlier. In fact, last year, long lines were formed in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, so do expect the same kind of frenzied scenario to happen with the Meizu MX as well.

Ever since the Meizu MX engineering samples were released to the media on December 8th, Meizu has collected user feedback from across the world, and that will be implemented in the final model, making sure that a whole slew of improvements and bug fixes were introduced, affecting both hardware and software. Among the more prominent hardware improvements will comprise of a anti-fingerprint coating to the camera lens, not to mention a whole lot easier to use hardware buttons, improving the aesthetics of the internal circuitry, not to mention improvements in overall build quality.

Other hardware configurations include a 326PPI high resolution display, a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, all working in tandem with the Flyme OS that is based on the Android operating system. Meizu has promised to deliver a Flyme OS version that is based on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS later this year, too.

Real Estate Investing in Canada: Watch Your Step | Real Estate ...

Actual estate investing is one of the surefire approaches to get rich with relative ease. All you have to worry is creating the investment in the initial location. Thereafter, your investment takes care of itself. As time progresses, you can rest assured that your investment will acquire a lot more and more value, bringing tons of cash your way. Unless a natural disaster hits the plot you have invested in, you can rely on your investment for finding back considerably high Return on Investment (ROI).

However, making a genuine estate investment in Canada is not an straightforward job. The principal step, that is, the act of investing itself, is challenging to pull off, specifically for novice investors. You have to recognize the profitability of the property you are investing. 1 man I know accidentally invested a lot of income in an old rickety home located in a suburban region, trusting the words of a shady agent. He did not bother to do any investigation on the background history of the property. Right after investing, he discovered out that the home was rumored to be haunted as nicely. The poor fellow is still attempting to sell it off after 7 years, and the agent is nowhere to be found. Constantly pick reputed real estate firms to avoid scenarios like this.

I would like to sum up the points here that beginner investors should follow in order to expect any sort of success in the actual estate industry. These would contain:

: This applies even if you are buying a property through a reputed actual estate firm. Often locate out as significantly as feasible about the property you are investing in. Bombard your agent with questions. Bear in mind, there is no such thing as a silly question. If a question is in your mind, then by all indicates, ask away.

: Often pay a visit to the property prior to you invest in it. There are a lot of aspects that could not be properly visible in photographs.

: If you are given a number of alternatives, always discover out the pros and cons of each option. Invest in the one which you feel will suit your financial condition.

That stated, genuine estate investing in Canada can be a fairly exciting job for any young investor. Canadian Actual Estate Investment Trust (CREIT) has already predicted a high rate of profit to be produced off these investments inside January 2010, producing this one of the finest times to take the plunge. Under typical circumstances, properties can only acquire value as time progresses, and losing out on your investment is a distant (and almost non-existent) possibility. So, get in touch with a reputable real estate firm like Homevestors these days, and embark on your journey to financial nirvana. On Facebook, Obama Has The Most Fans, Ron Paul The Highest ?Viral Reach?

socialbakers2Social media analytics firm Socialbakers has?tracked more than 10 million Facebook Pages and Places plus billions of individual user interactions in order to determine who the most popular, engaging and influential presidential candidates are on Facebook. Not surprisingly, incumbent Obama has the most Facebook fans, which is one way to measure "popularity." That's not necessarily the fairest way in this case, given that many of those supporters arrived during Obama's previous campaign efforts.

Screen queen, golf kings get royal honours

LONDON | Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:00am GMT

LONDON Dec 31 (Reuters) - After playing the mother of Queen Elizabeth in "The King's Speech", actress Helena Bonham Carter will take part in a real-life royal performance when she receives an honour from the monarch herself.

The actress is among close to 1,000 people from all walks of life whose achievements are recognised in the annual New Year's Honours List.

Northern Irish golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke, who won the U.S. and British opens this year, are also on the list, capping an outstanding year for UK golf.

Most of the people honoured with knighthoods or a variety of slightly lesser traditional titles such as Commander, Officer or Member of the Order of the British Empire (CBE, OBE and MBE), are unknown to the public.

Among them is former teenage drug dealer and gang member Chris Preddie, now 24, who renounced crime after his brother was shot dead and now campaigns against knife and gun crime among black youths in London.

Preddie is related to two brothers who murdered a 10-year-old boy in 2000, a crime that shocked Britain. The victim's father told British media he objected to Preddie being honoured with an OBE.

TV producer Peter Bazalgette, credited with popularising the "Big Brother" reality show format across the globe, will receive a knighthood - becoming Sir Peter - which may please legions of Big Brother fans but dismay critics who say the show is vulgar.

PALACE POMP

Novelist Penelope Lively, a past winner of the prestigious Booker Prize for her 1987 novel Moon Tiger, is also on the list. She becomes a "Dame", the female equivalent of a knighthood.

A rung down from a Dame with her CBE award, Bonham Carter received one of her two Oscar nominations for portraying Queen Elizabeth's mother in Oscar-winning film The King's Speech.

She will experience true royal pomp when she receives her award at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace next year, but she is no stranger to nobility, coming from an aristocratic family. Her great-grandfather, the Earl of Oxford and Asquith, served as prime minister under Elizabeth's grandfather, King George V.

Also honoured at a high point in a long career is golfer Clarke, who won the last British Open at the age of 42, on his 20th attempt. He will receive an OBE, one step down from CBE.

It was a particularly emotional win for Clarke, who has gone through hard times since losing his wife to cancer in 2006. He was the oldest winner of the Open since 1967 and the first home champion in 12 years.

McIlroy will have an MBE to show for his efforts during a rollercoaster year that saw him throw away victory at the U.S. Masters in April only to bounce back by clinching his first major at the U.S. Open in June.

At 22, McIlroy was the youngest winner of the championship since 1923.

Queen Elizabeth, whose sporting interests lie more in the world of horse-racing than of golf, does not draw up the Honours' List herself. Government officials seek out worthy recipients, who can also be nominated by members of the public.
